How SONING CRAFT was founded?
SONING CRAFT first started operating on 16 July 2005. The 10 feet wide stall is located in Wawasan Handicraft Center in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, East Malaysia, at the cost of RM 350.00 per month for rent.
Before SONING CRAFT was founded, Mazeline Soning and Malina Soning sold handicrafts during handicraft fairs around Kota Kinabalu, organized by relevant agencies. The reason for doing so was to find opportunities to market the handicrafts produced by people from their village.
From experience selling during those handicraft fairs, they found that there were not enough market opportunities and that the market is inconsistent. This inspired them to rent a stall to ensure the continuous sale of the handicraft and to make it easier for customers to make orders.
Who runs SONING CRAFT?
SONING CRAFT is managed by sisters, Mazeline Soning and Malina Soning. Mazeline is responsible for operating SONING CRAFT, specifically marketing the handicrafts and ensuring that there is adequate stock. Besides that she also sources for handicrafts from other ethnic groups in Sabah, such as the Dusun and Murut people.
Malina on the other hand is responsible for coordinating the SINOMPURU Women’s Group. Her responsibilities include organizing meetings on craft production with the members of SINOMPURU, improving the design, color scheme, natural resources and payment of profits back to the makers. She also manages SINOMPURU’s community fund.
The SINOMPURU Women's group
The idea of setting up SONING CRAFT was based on the need to ensure the continuous sale of the handicraft produced by the SINOMPURU members. SINOMPURU is made up of 16 members who are single mothers and the elderly who are struggling to make ends meet. Some of them also have many children whom they have to raise on their own (more on the
