About CANDO CRAFTS CENTER

Cando Crafts Center is a social enterprise that adopts social and environmental responsibility and fair trade principles. It is the crafts enterprise development strategy of the Cambodian NTFP Development Organization (CANDO) with a focus on marketing and product development service.

Established in June 2006 by development workers Sarim Heang and Sophay Uch, Cando is committed to improve the living conditions of forest-based people in the northeast province of Ratanakiri through micro and small enterprise development, promotion of women and gender in development, micro-credit service and sustainable NTFP management.

Cando Crafts Center (CCC) helps indigenous artisans to produce traditional crafts and textiles that preserve their artistic and cultural value. In addition, craft production and marketing are linked to local resources and forest governance to ensure resource sustainability.

CCC strives to provide employment and income to indigenous and rural women and men through marketing and product development of indigenous and Cambodian crafts. CCC provides market access to community-based craft enterprises and small producer groups. In addition, it also provides product development services such as product design and quality improvement for artisans.

In addition, CCC provides product design and development services to assist indigenous weavers and artisans to produce unique and high quality traditional textiles and crafts. CCC also provides training sessions, learning exposure trips, and technical assistance to the community-based enterprises.

CCC plays a critical role supporting market access to ensure that the products made by the community-based enterprises are marketable. CCC buys directly from these enterprises based on fair price agreements. CCC then supplies to buyers who are committed to improving rural livelihoods.

CCC also enables women who have limited access to income generation to contribute to their family wellbeing by providing them with income earning opportunities.

CCC works by having constant discussions, meetings and information-sharing to inform and educate partners and producers of fair trade practices.
