In the 80s, the Talantang and Igiu plant almost went extinct due to frequent forest fires which made the river narrower. Because of that, they are now no longer found growing in the wild by the river banks or even near rice fields.
However during that time, two individuals from Kampung Tinangol experimented making 1 string necklaces out of Talantang and Igiu seeds and glass beads. It was a hit in the capital city, Kota Kinabalu. Since then, the Rungus community has been aware of its commercial value and therefore started to protect it.
